Very few things in the world can match the fame and popularity of Star Wars. George Lucas’ masterpiece of science fiction revolutionized the film industry and changed the way we look at movies.

Star Wars stands the test of time with die hard fans of all ages throughout the world. The films themselves are unforgettable, but the merchandise and additional media that accompanied the films was equally unforgettable.

In fact the merch plays a large part in the extreme popularity and exposure of the franchise as a whole. Things such as action figures, children’s cartoon series,’ and who hasn’t poked out a siblings eye with the varying toy lightsabers? But, let’s not forget some of the most beloved content to come from the films, that being numerous video games.

With the newest installment of the Star Wars franchise rapidly approaching release this Christmas season, let’s take a look back into the history of the games that accompanied the films.

For the month of December the spotlight goes on the classic Star Wars game, The Empire Strikes Back. Released in 1985 by Atari, The Empire Strikes Back is actually the 3rd game to be released from the original Star Wars arcade games, releasing after the Return of The Jedi. Although this did not follow the order of the films, the game was released after the Star Wars and Return of the Jedi games as part of an upgrade kit designed for the 1st game.

Empire Strikes Back, much like the first Star Wars Atari game, uses vector graphics common amongst games of that same period. It is centered around the scene from the film at the battle of Hoth, pitting the player up against imperial walkers in an attempt to deter the Empire’s incoming onslaught.

Although the game was not given as much attention as its predecessor, the game was and is still a great way to experience the thrills of a galaxy far far away.

The Empire Strikes Back is a great game that you are sure to never forget when you come to play at Flynn’s Retrocade. Come in this holiday season and enjoy a nostalgic thrill ride sure to transport you to a galaxy far far away.
